Unfortunately, shady people steal packages from people’s doorsteps all the time and often get away with it. Some victims of this type of theft have resorted to setting up surveillance cameras to identify thieves, but one man took matters into his own hands after repeatedly having his online purchases delivered and stolen from his porch dozens of times.
Jaireme Barrow, from Tacoma, Washington, explained that living on a busy street combined with frequent package deliveries and an inviting porch seem to make his house ripe for being ripped off.
He found a way to get back at any would-be thief by setting up a trap that he maintains is totally harmless, but certainly gives any porch pirate the scare of a lifetime.
Jaireme rigged a box with a 12-gauge blank shotgun shell that detonates when the box is lifted off of the porch. The resulting noise is very startling, as can be witness from the security cameras he has set up by his front door.
Sadly, the numbers of people who have fallen victim to what’s known as “porch pirates” is pretty significant. According to Forbes, “Shorr Packaging Corp surveyed 1,000 consumers and found that 31% have had a package stolen, and 41% of those surveyed said they do not buy certain products online because they fear that the items will be stolen if left outside their front door.”
Jaireme’s situation prompted him to create the semi-exploding box and he garnered so much attention for it that people wanted to buy them to thwart thieves as well.
